Angry Hot!

Ok.. as I saw this in another post... thought I would put my in here...

Problems? Oh yes.. hot power supply? Yes, again. I've had troubles with low VBAT voltage... 2.03 when it should be 3.03 or higher.

Running a bit hard the other day and system locked... mouse and all.. I remember seeing that having the mouse lock too was an issue in overheating. Sure enough, I checked the side of the case where the PS is located.. TOO HOT! = don't wanna touch it for long... dropped that side of the case.. temps went down real quick. Ok... enough... took the whole system down.. all cards, PS, wiring, etc... and cleaned it out REAL good!

What a difference!!

VBAT still shows low, but not all the time... however, cooling is ok now.. if you are up to it, (meaning qualified to open up the case on a PS) check the capacitors in the PS.. I found that mine have a bit of colour down one side... and only one of them... meaning.. that one is heading out. Not good. All else shows good.

P4 useage is about 56%... but again.. need more mem....

Would still like some more options as to FSB... unfortunately, there is a $60 charge for getting the new BIOS d/l.... and after a fall down some stairs, broken parts galore, shall we say ....... no $$$'s!!

Can't go there right now.

All opinions and comments welcome!

Chiaz... this doesn't speak to the FSB issue that you let me know about... even when the VBAT is where it should be, I still don't have the option of what you posted.

All capacitors age-- PSU's life is finite...
If you are getting signs like heat-- it will be time shortly.
How long ? Who knows...
I'd put something like Speedfan or Motherboard Monitor on there and set it to sound an alarm if it goes into meltdown-- time to start saving-- with the rest of your hardware-- it should not be much.

Yes, that is true, bills, and as I put this together in '01, that time is probably coming soon. SmartGuardian came with the SOYO MB, and loads at startup, but I also have Speedfan keeping a peek at things. It has more options than SG, but Speedfan looks for more temps and fans speeds than I have. Neither one looks at the PSU temp... just the Chassis temp. I've sent the info to SF in hopes that there is something that I've missed, but there doesn't appear to be any other sensor that I can hook up, so I'll just have to keep it opened up until such time as I can get her upgraded, I guess. Even sent off to Seagate to check on their specs on the HD.... a little warm there too, but comfortable enough, compared to what it used to run. Temps in the area have been running hotter than usual lately and this is upstairs, so that hasn't helped, but still....

Thanks for the looksee ih8bills.....

a 2001 model mobo might not even have a chip sensor built-in.

Harddrives tend to run warm... especially an older one. Those bearings are amazing-- I used to do a little machining-- so I know... spinning at seven thousand RPM constantly for years on end. Before computers-- those were pipe dreams.Even the bearings for a drive like that would have to be measured via laser--in a temperature-controlled environment. Tolerances in the millionths of an inch.

A friend of mine once worked at Brown & Sharpe-- they had a demo-- when he was first hired... of a laser measuring tool. There was a finely machined block of steel 6"L x 4''W x 2'' thick. It was measured by the machine-- down to the millionth. That figure was recorded--then they had a volunteer come up and simply place his hand on the block for 5 minutes. It was re-measured-- the heat from the man's hand had expanded the block by 50 millionths of an inch. Enough to throw it "out of tolerance" for that type of tool. It is unreal what modern equipment can do.
