Exclamation [Pending] Machine Check Exception

Several times my friend's PC has blue screened with the error Machine Check Exception. It has happened both after only a few minutes and after being on for several days. I've heard that one of the things that can cause this is an improperly attached heatsink or some other kind of heating issue.

It hasn't happened extremely frequently and I do need to use the machine, but I would hate to damage my friends machine. What are the best ways to make sure that it is not a heating issue of some kind?

Thanks!

Normal causes for MCE errors are overheating and/or incorrect hardware installation. Overheating can cause electrons to become more animated and thus escape from the silicon tracks, resulting in corrupted data.

Some specific manually induced causes could be...Overclocking (naturally increases heat output) or poorly fitted heatsink/computer fans (the same problem can happen with excessive dust in the CPU fan)

Computer software can also cause errors in this way (normally by corrupting data they are reading or writing).
For example: Software performing read or write operations to non-existent memory regions which leads to confusion for the processor and/or the system bus. Or, certain sequences of operations may trigger processors to become confused - for example if too many programs are being executed at the same time.

There are numbers like you mention displayed but I can't find the bluescreen saved in my event viewer or whatever. The CPU is not overclocked.

It is most likely improper hardware installation and I am pretty sure that if it is, it's the CPU. I've had some difficulty removing it though and I don't really know where to start. Should I pull it out? Then what should I check for as I take it out/reinstall it?

This may sound dumb, but if you want to reinstall the CPU, the best advise I can give you is read and follow the documentation that came with the CPU.

Good Luck...
