Default Trouble with NEW CPU

I have a Sony PCV RX-650 with a 1.6 Ghz socket 478 P4. I read on other forums that I can upgrade it to a 2.4 Northwood. I bought one online and installed it. Temperatures on bootup at around 35 C. Everything runs fine for a while until the PC shuts itself off. When I turn it on, the Hard Drive light will stay on and not load any more further than that. Anybody happen to know what I might've done wrong? I applied a thin layer of Arctic Silver Thermal Paste on the CPU's surface before I attached the heatsink again.

Thanks

Hello Riotblade,

Whenever changing processors you need to know the core voltage and multiplier the new processor needs to run properly. Without knowing what your motherboard is I can not give specific steps to a fix. However some motherboards will sense your processor after a BIOS reset. Either replacing the old processor on the MB or trying the BIOS reset are your options at this point, if I'm not mistaken. Check you manual for the specs.

Good Hunting

LC

As Lord Chance said make sure the voltages/multiplier and fsb match and/or try resetting the cmos (jumper or battery)

You may also wanna check for any bios updates.
