No post, no video signal, out of ideas, please help!
Hey guys, I really hope you can help me with this, my specs are as follows:
AMD64 3200
pny 6600GT pci-e
audigy 2
2x512 corsair xms3200 ram
seagate 250gb sata hd
antec 400w dual 12v rail psu
old mobo - asus a8n-sli deluxe
new mobo - foxconn 939 sli ekrs
Right, well, here's the problem, I've had this system running fine for the past 9 months or so, not problems at all. I was playing bf2142 the other day, changed the graphics options in the game, was running a little choppy, decided to restart the pc to see if it would improve it (usually does).
Unfortunately it wouldn't restart. I get a blank screen, monitor in standby mode. Fans spin up on cpu, gpu and mobo. I then got 5 beeps, 2 quick then 3 evenly spaced, this doesn't repeat. After the 5 beeps the cpu fan speeds up.
I tried to determine the fault by taking all the parts out one at a time, nothing made any difference until it got down to just the cpu, then I get 1 long beep 2 short. This repeats every ten seconds or so.
I tried clearing the cmos a few times and replaced the cmos battery with no luck. I've also tried with a different monitor and different ram with no change.
I already had a hard drive on order from ebuyer so added the foxconn mobo to it, as I've had different issues with this mobo when I first built this pc (the reason i ordered the foxconn is that it's the only non asus pci-e 939 board they stock now!).
This arrived and I stuck processor, ram and gpu in, connected up the psu and tried it out.
With just the CPU connected I get 1 long beep which repeats every 10-15 seconds.
With CPU and ram in I get 1 long beep and 2 short, after these beeps the cpu fan switches itself off!
With cpu, ram and gpu in I get no beeps no video, same as with the asus but no beeps, tried changing the ram, no difference.
I thought then that my gpu was knackered, took it to my local pc shop and they tried it out and it worked fine...
I'm really not sure what the issue is now, any suggestions? I'm thinking of replacing the CPU with an amd64 3800, but before I blow £42 would be nice to know it's actually going to make a difference to my situation, I really need this PC working for my degree. Any suggestions?!
Cheers,
Tom

try finding out what the problem is, by using the process of elimination. You also might want to look in the mainboard's uers manual to find out what does beeps are about. Those beeps have a meanig, for example 5 beeps, 2 quick then 3 evenly spaced, might point to a graphics card error.

Thanks for the reply, my mobo manual doesn't say what the 5 beeps mean, It's an award phoenix bios, it doesn't say on the net what 5 beeps is but one long and 2 short is apparently a vga error. My new mobo doesn't give me any beeps when i have gpu, cpu and ram in and power up, no video signal, fans spin.
Also, took the pc to a shop the other and they tried out a different psu with no change.
When I changed mobos i did notice the processor had a little grey smudgy patch a couple of mm across on the top, after I'd wiped off the old thermal paste. Would this be indicative of a failed cpu?
Cheers!
Tom

in a normal situatin it shoud work fine with a new video card, how old is your cpu? Did you ever overclocked it?

No I never overclocked it, it's about a year and a half old, maybe a little more... I've ordered a new (faster) CPU and a 7600GT so hopefully one of those things will fix it. I just don't get why the gpu worked in the pc at the shop, especially as I've got a new mobo and the same result...
Will know on tuesday, if these two don't sort it I'm gonna go sick!

Hi Therinser, welcome to the PCHF.
Try resetting your BIOS. If you're not sure how to do this, let me know.
