Usage randomly hits 100% and stays at 100%
Hi, sorry this is a pretty long one...a lot of times now i have been browsing the internet or word processing, sometimes listening to music at the same time and i will notice my computer going very slow. i bring up task manager and the processing power is maxing out, then about 2-3 mins later it restarts - so i opened it up took the processor out and the thermal paste i had put there months ago had basically gone (which was not totally unexpected as i work my computer hard) so i put a big dollop on then put it back together thinking this will solve the problem.
I did notice a big improovement in the computers speed, but bout 30 mins before posting this message the same thing happened - the thing i was hoping you guys would be able to help me with is that i have a "x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~2799 Mhz" processore (according to xp's system information). When i notice the processor is at 100% i look at the processes tab to see wat is causeing so much use but it seems the same amount of process that was being used before the max out
Whats confusing me is that i have had a game running where it was using 150,000 K plus all the normal processes which are about 4x20K 2x8K 6x4K 6x2K 6x1K and about 5 processes that are under 1000K all of these processes are there when the processor hits 100% (except the 150,000K as i was not playing the game) but all have been there when the games been running and with the extra 150,000K the processor doesnt max out. Now i dont know much about processors as you can probably tell but i know that my processor was fairly expensive and has a good speed, surely it can handle the processes i just mentioned - thats not including the 150,00K.
Attached is a list of the processes which were very similar at the time of the max out, as im sure you can see the processor should be able to handle these processes - when the problem occurs its not like the computer has been on for hours, sometimes it can happen 30 mins after turning it on - even then the heat out the back fans is pretty cool.
Can anyone suggest anything?
any suggestions would be appreciated
David
