Talking Cpu temp.

Hi. I was wondering...
My cpu fan is not running when my computer starts up. I'm not sure if it starts at a later stage. I felt my heatsink...ISH..very hot.
So. How do I test my fan to see if it is still working?
At what temp should the fan start?or should it be running from startup??
please help..

Hi Besem,

Welcome to The PCHF!

The cpu fan should be spinning from the moment you start the pc.The fact that yours isn't shows that it's more than likely blown. There isn't really any way to repair them, just replace. The heatsink will get fairly hot but you should be able to touch it without too much discomfort. Most processors will run ok run at between 35 and 60 degrees, anything over that for is getting a bit too hot, if you go much over 65-70 degrees there is a very high risk of damaging the processor which can be a very expensive replacement.
I would seriously reccomend that you get a replacement fan ASAP and don't use the pc until you do.
Keep us posted on how you get on.

how will I know if it isn't aleady damaged?
But I'll get myself a new fan and ceep you up to date and tell you how my new fan works.
Ps.Is there a way of testing if it is the fan.Maybe it's not getting any power. So what do you suggest.
One last thing. Is there any specific type of fan or maybe something else that will keep my cpu cool??

Unfortunately the only way to tell if it's already damaged is to test it in another system, if you know someone who is happy to let you try it in their system, go for that. As to the fan, generally the fan tends to go first, it is very unusual for only the cpu fan power section to go. You could try the fan connected to the case fan power point, but, take the cpu out before you do that as it's a sure way to blow it by running it without a fan.
What processor do you have so I can make some better recommendations as to what sort of fans you should be looking at?

I've got a Celeron 2.4 processor. My fan is working again. But I still want to know if there is some other device that can keep my cpu very cool..
Another question..Is It possible to put some extra cooling device on your graphics card?

Hi besem.

There are only a couple of choices for Cooling.

First and most common is fan - this is what everyone has by default
Second and growing in popularity - water cooling...it's expensive and tricky to modify your computer & case to support it
Third and least likely to keep the computer 'cool' - passive cooling, which is just giant heat sinks to spread the heat around...this makes the computer the hottest.

If you're worried about temps in your computer, clean it out from all dust (do not vaccuum anywhere near the motherboard) and throw in a couple of extra case fans - definately can't hurt.
