First, I would look at doing some "Housekeeping" without any additonal utilities...Try things like:
Defragment your HDDs...
Go to your ADD/Remove Programs list in your CONTROL PANEL and kill anything unused or OLD and RARELY used...
Clean out your recycle bin..On a related note, RIGHT-CLICK on the recycle bin and check out the "PROPERTIES" option...usually, by default, your systme takes 5 to 10 % (That's right, PERCENT) of your available space and allocates it for the Recycle Bin...If you regularly clean house, you can try reducing the amount of space it has allocated by adjusting theh slider to the left, to whatever you are comfortable with leaving the setting at...
Run START, RUN PROGRAMS, ACCESORIES, DISK CLEANUP...
go to Windows Explorer and find your PREFETCH folder under C:\WINDOWS directory...click on EDIT, SELECT ALL, and delete everything...
Clear out your temporary internet file folder and your cookies...
Assuming you don't already have them, download and run the following FREE programs:
Hijack This (At least with the demo version you CAN get a starting picture of anything mal-ware-wise it may find)
RegSeeker...By FAR...My favorite Housekeeping utility, with SEVERAL nifty tools to get the dirt out...
Ad Aware and SpyBot (Or SpySweeper, I use all 3...Nothing wrong with redundant housekeeping)
If, by now, it is NOT any faster, I would say it is likely that your system is infected...
However, don't overlook the possiblity of any unknown hardware failures either...
At the very least, if it IS a minor clutter issue, this exercise will take care of it usually...
Check it out and see what happens...
