It's not uncommon for the power to go off where I live when it's raining. I was using my PC, although there was no lightning, the power in my apartment abruptly cut off, then immediately came back on. Off went my PC with it.

Once the power returned, everything came back on--the television, my cable modem, my monitor. However, when I try to turn my computer back on, the only things that seem to work are the fans---and they are abnormally loud. The hard drive flickers only for a moment, followed by no activity. My monitor shows that here is no power source between itself and the computer even though both are connected.

So what happened? Is my PC done-for?

Considering your circumstances, I would highly recommend purchasing surge protectors or even better a UPS to keep your PC running when the power goes down. It may save you money in the long run, as it is likely that there is some damage to your system. What PC do you have?

Your non booting problem could be related to your memory. Try removing it, and inserting it again, as it may kick your computer back into life.

That or reset your BIOS.

I do, however, completely agree with madmonkey on the idea of buying a surge protector....definately a good idea.

I agree as well buy a surge protector. You can get them very cheap and with conncected equipment warranites so that if anything does get affected by a surge when connected you can get some money or a replacement.
