Default limit cpu usage

how do i stop my programs from using more than 50% of my cpu? is there a program that can limit the amount of cpu percentage that programs on my computer can use? i have searched around and found threadmaster but i dont know how the hell you use it, are there any others?
the reason for this is because if i use more than 50% of my cpu my fan comes on on my laptop and it is quite annoying also i just want to reduce the stress on my processor.
thanks

Personally... I would not suggest attempting to limit the fan cycles in a laptop... in a desktop you have a little more leeway. In a laptop-- everything is so tightly crammed in-- that you could easily FRY your CPU.
Threadmaster is intended for servers... as in running a large website-- in order to prevent one user from hogging all the website's "bandwidth" --and therefore shutting everyone else out.

Your CPU is not the only thing generating heat-- and it is normal for your cooling fan to cycle on/off. You should not mess with this cycle. You could turn that laptop into a bookend quite easily.

Hi killo, welcome to the forum.

I agree with ih8bills completely, it's a very bad idea to limit the cpu usage for the purpose of not having the fan's spin up.

if i keep the cpu usage under 50% it will not stop the fan altogether, but it will come on alot less so that my laptop will not be damaged by the heat. and if i am only using 50% then less heat will be generated so the fan coming on alot less will be ok for it.
and anyway if the cpu is getting to the temperature that it will be fried, the fan will come on no matter how much % of cpu i am using so the cpu will be ok. i know my fan will still come on if i use less than 50% of cpu but it's just that it will come on alot less and be quieter.

Default fan noise is annoying

So is it the noise that the fan makes that is annoying? If so, I understand. I find fan noise distracting as well.

Here are a couple of suggestions.

1) Try standing the laptop off of the desktop surface (make more space between the bottom of the laptop and the the top of your desk). I do this using a couple of blocks of wood, one on either side. Better convective air circulation might help keep the fan off.

2) Turn on something else to listen to that will drown out the sound of the fan. Try an MP3 player with earbuds, a radio, a TV.

3) Try noise cancelling headphones.

Good luck. And please let us all know if any of these helped.

Matt
