a scraping noise...

do you have a microphone? Perhaps you could record the sound you're hearing.

Otherwise, try a check disk
Right click on C: and select Properties, then Tools and click on Check Now....
Check both the boxes and select Start

This will cause your computer to restart.

I'm back - Did chkdsk, found errors, but can you tell me where I go to view the log? Also, upon reboot I got "The system has recovered from a serious error" BCCode;10000000a, BCP1:830D100C, BCP2:00000002, BCP3:00000001, BCP4:8066B604 OSVer:5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product: 768_1. Dont have a clue what that means. I'm also noticing that my fan is not ramping up as it used to when I boot up. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

No problems, it's what we're here for.
The command i told you to run shouldn't have created a log file.

If you're still worried about the error, run a SFC
Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

This will scan all your system files and replace any damanged/missing files. You will need your Windows CD ready as it will ask for it when it finds the first file.

Also, it may be worth an hour or so if you follow the Prework steps in my signiture just to make sure your computer is clean of nasty software

Oops I should have looked a little better

But In my own opinion as I think GaRHaR as well it may be the Hard drive. As most fans now adays are brush less, this does not mean your is though. If you can try installing something and see if you hear the sound then. Or uninstall or even better defragment the hard drive. Thbis will make it work hard..

I still dont like that temp though for an INTEL under no load. I have an AMD 4800+X2 dual core overclocked to FX60 speeds and it only goes to about 47c under full load. But then again yours is a laptop.

Do you have an extra laptop HD to try?

If you oipen up the back can you put your ear next to the HD and see if you can pinpoint the sound?

Thanks for the reply, but, I am on a PC not a laptop. Haven't had the time to do all the pre-work yet, I'll get on it and be back later with reports.

Hey Rebbie!

You could also try to stop your CPU fan, by disconnecting it, or stopping it with your finger.

But, only do this if you know what you're doing and don't do it for longer than a few seconds.

If the sound stops when you stop the fan, it's clear that this fan is making the noise.

Again, be careful, if you're not sure on what you're doing, don't do it.

HI all,
Sorry for the delay in posting, but, I came back and you were gone, then I was gone. Anyway, apparently the noise is coming from my hard drive, the fans are all fine. It kind of sounds like a cricket. I can replace the hard drive, but, I don't have an OS, due to the fact that Sony didn't give me any restore cd's, ya know, it's all built in! Anyway to fix this?
Thanks for your time - Rebbie
