hi dave. It's not as simple as comparing ghz anymore with AMD and Intel.

AMD have their CPU's named 3800+ or 4600+ or 2800+ etc etc...each one of those 3 i have just give you...are all 2ghz CPUs...and they all out performce 3ghz intels.

Basically what you have to do, is consider what you want to do with this new computer of yours, and how much money you're going to spend.

I see AMD and Intel as high performance cars and muscle cars. AMD has the clever design, as does high performance...whereas intel has the brute force, as does muscle cars.

What kind of AMD CPU are you looking at? And what Intel CPU are you comparing it to?

i am comparing an amd athlon 3700+ which clocks in at 2.2 ghz to my intel pent. 4 which is at 2.79 also on a different tangent...what is the potential weakness or vulnerability to a gaming pc? (aside from the fact that it gets outdated easily)

Well, the computer I currently have, I've had since August last year. Only thing I've changed, is video card and added 3 new hard drives. Computers last longer then what people think - it's just they don't stay "new" very long anymore.

The 3700+ would be much better then your current Intel. I prefer AMD over Intel always, but that's just me. I'm not sure on what kind of scores they would get, but the 2.8ghz p4 is fairly old now, being only on the northwood core (i believe...). The 3700+ would be a noticeable performance increase.

And weakness/vulnerability? There isn't that much difference anymore. Just die hard AMD fans, and diehard Intel fans. AMD used to have heat issues...not anymore. Intel used to be bad for gaming, but the Conroe has thrown that away as well.

It just goes down to cost and purpose now. I'm always going to prefer AMD over Intel for gaming. But that's how I've been taught in this world of computers that we live in
