Default [Answered] Worth it? 1.6 p4 -> 2.8 celeron

lookin to do some upgrades to get some more life out of my pretty old machine

current specs:
1.6 p4
geforce4 mx 440 (its gadda get changed, but i havn't pc gamed in ages, so i've let it go)
768 pc2700 ram (a 512 stick and a 256 stick)
40 gb hdd
8 gb hdd
cheapo ECS refurbished mobo i found on new egg for like 26 bucks

figured the mobo would have more life in it than my old asus board that been powered on for the past 5 years, and if not it i was only out of a tiny bit of money

gonna replace that ancient 8 gig hdd with a 80 gig.

lookin for a video card thats on the cheap side. like a ati 9550 or somethin, i dunno, gadda research it more

but my main question is, saw a 2.8 celeron cpu for a cheap (50 dollars) , that sounds GREAT to me, but i got to keep in mind thats its a celeron...

also its OEM, which makes me very nervous with a cpu

worth it? recommendations?

edit - also gonna throw another stick of 256 ram to bump it to a gig

Hya Gimpster , welcome to PCHF.

Can you post the model of that ECS board? Then we can look what kind of processors that board can handle, and if you can keep using the ram from the old Asus board. Also if it has AGP, PCI-e or just PCI slots for the videocard.

i'm using this beauty: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135013

i allready installed it and specifically got it to work with all my old components, so yeah it all works

cheap is a major factor, i don't wanna dump a lot of money into this machine because i could just put it toward a whole new build

ps- sorry the early bump hehe, was getting it to show up on the main page where it shows new posts
