You dont say which O/S you are using but all are similar. On the pc with the printer in printer properties you will find a tab for sharing. Share the printer and give everyone full rights to print.
Then on the other pc's goto add a printer choose network printer then search and they should all find it and install the drivers. If all pc's have the same O/S its ok but if some are Vista and some xp it will have a problem with drivers as the pc's download drivers from the pc thats sharing. All pc must be in the same workgroup and same ip range(they should be if they all get the internet). The pc with the printer will have to be on to be able to print.

Here is a step by step guide. You need to connect the printer via USB to a PC. I assume this 'server' PC will be tucked away in a back room somewhere. Note that this 'server' PC has to be turned on and connected to the network in order for other PC's to print.
Here are the steps for sharing a printer on a network. Everything takes place in Start > Control Panel > (Switch To Classic View) > Printers And Faxes Note; The words 'laptop' and 'PC' are interchangeable. Last time I posted this someone wanted to print through a laptop. 1. Right click your USB printer(s) and click Sharing > Share Printer 2. On the laptop (in Printers And Faxes) click Add A Printer 3. Choose Add A Network Printer or A Printer Attached To Another Computer 4. In the box type \\computer\printer Where computer is the Computer Name of the PC which both printers are connected to by USB and printer is the Share Name which you gave the printer(s) 5. To find out the Computer Name of the "server" PC (with the USB printers connected to it) click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties 6. Type in the details and you should be asked to install a print driver 7. Follow the steps onscreen and the printer should be installed 8. Print a test page if you want Let me know if that works -------------------------------------- You can use a print server if you like spending money for no reason. However, the benefit is that in order to print only the printer itself needs to be turned on (instead of the 'server' PC). Note that you will also need to somehow connect the print server to the network. Either by wireless, putting an Ethernet cable through walls, etc. |

Thankyou. The thing is, the other pc's do not have no connectors to the printer. I do not have a printer server either. I do not know what to buy and how to set it up. As the main pc, the one connected to the printer is on windows vista, the rest on xp. All i want to do is connect the other pc's to the printer. What do i need to buy in order to do this.
Thankyou for your time. |
