i tried that i typed '//Bec-Central/Shared Printer' and it brought up an error message 'Windows cannot connect to the printer. Eother the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server' in my oppinion the error message came up far to fast, i would guess it didnt even check/search :-s oh ive just realised while looking at the example i had the / the wrong way around, i changed them then search again...this time it took a second to bring up the error but then when i tried again it was instant

Actually I think I gave you the wrong syntax there

If you haven't already tried it like this try:

\\Bec-Central\Shared Printer

no mate, i copied and pasted and it still gives the same error after a short pause :-s

Try this on the Desktop:

Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Press OK > Then type in ping Bec-Central.
You should see Reply from .... bytes= .... etc

If you don't on the laptop go to Start > Run > cmd > type in ipconfig > and note down the IPv4 or IP address (will be something like 192.168.0.4). Then use that IP address in the ping command above instead of the name Bec-Central on the Desktop PC.

cudnt find bec central, tried to ping the address and it timed out with 100% loss :-s

Firewall might be getting in the way. Try this: On the XP system click start>search>computers or people>a computer on the network> then supply the ip address from the vista system and see if the xp system can find it.
