Default Ghost printing

I have a hp deskjet 845c and it just out of nowhere print a page with just a kite and and a few words on it pertaining to hp. Is that I have to update the firmware or something, because this is using a lot of paper for no reason and I want it to stop. I tried unplugging it for a long period of times (days) and when I plug it back up, it starts printing more of those pages. Help me with this please!

You need to check the print queue for the printer.

To do this go into printers. With the View on Details you can see how many documents are waiting to print. Try deleting all the jobs listed. If you can't you can get rid of them from a command prompt - type:

net stop spool

Go to c:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers - delete all the files in that folder.

at command prompt type:

net start spool

If there are no jobs listed in the print queues in any of the pc's - then check to make sure none of the buttons on the HP are stuck.

If you still keep getting random printing then the printer could be stuffed or one of the pc's may have a virus. Try doing a factory reset on the printer to see if this helps. If you ring HP they will tell you over the phone how to do a factory reset. Check pc's for virus/malware. Does the random printing start when you open an email? If so then it's definately a virus. If all this doesn't fix the problem - then you most likely need a new printer.

It's not connected to the computer, physically, when this happens. But I'm going to try what you told me and see what happens and I'll post back here to update you. Thanks!

If it's not physically connected to any pc or a network when this happens - then either a button is jammed on the printer or it's faulty. Try factory reset, if that doesn't work, you can call out a printer technician or get a new printer. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a new printer than get it fixed by a technician but ultimately it's up to you.

Ok. Like you said, you don't know how to do a factory reset right?

That sounds like the Printer "Test page" for my old HP 845-- it has to be a sticking button

Each printer is different try this - although it's not specifically for your printer it may help.

How to factory reset the printer
Follow the steps below to reset the printer:
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold down the RESUME button and then press and release the POWER button to turn on the printer.
  3. Release the RESUME button after the printer initializes.
