These drives sound like the 160Gb pocket drive I have for my HP where the lead has like 2 usb connectors, one for power and the other for data transfer and are extremely well sealed.
If this is what they are then it may be best to bin them as it would more trouble than it's worth trying to get them open.

Yep these are the 'cute' portable pocket drives. I could get the cases open I guess by damaging them. Is there anyway to reset them? They are so irritating...and for both to go like this. I dont think I'll be buying any WD products soon.

Reset them?
2.5" drives commonly incorported in laptops are prone to be easily damaged at the best of times, fickle creatures they are. I'd get meaty 3.5" external drives in future.
