Default Sleepy Mouse

I've just installed a 'Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000' on my DellDimension 9150 (XP Home, SP3). Every 10 minutes or so it seems to go to sleep and refuses to move. After a minute or so it seems to recover. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

Lazy mouse you have there?

Just joking.

We have a great Tech Team who will help you with this issue.

But firstly have you updated the mouse driver and checked mouse settings in control panel?

I will mark your thread as "Open" in readyness for the team to help you with your problem.

JB.

Hey Guys,

@ Idiot, my personal welcome to PCHF.

Is the mouse connection plugged into a USB Hub? If so, do you have a direct USB port that you could use instead?

Verify that the Hidclass.sys, Hidparse.sys, and Hidusb.sys files are in the Windows\System32\Drivers folder. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on My Computer and choose Explore,
2. Double-click on C:\, Windows, System 32, then Drivers
3. In the right-hand pane, highlight the first item, and then begin to type continuously, h-i-d-c
4. Locate Hidclass.sys, scroll down to locate Hidparse.sys, and Hidusb.sys.

If any of the files are missing, you will need to do an sfc scan. To do this go to Start, Run, and type in sfc /scannow exactly as shown with the space betwee the c and the /. Hit Enter. This will replace any damaged or missing system files.

There are a number of other varables and fixes that can be tried, let's start out with these and see if it does the trick.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

I know some wireless mice go to sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity so that it saves battery power. Maybe yours does the same? Clicking it should let it regain control.

All

Thanks for the advice. Results:
- the mouse is connected to a USB directly in the back of the PC, not via a hub
- all the files (Hidclass.sys, scroll down to locate Hidparse.sys, and Hidusb.sys) are present
- I have checked everything relevant in the control Panel (including updating the driver)
- The mouse goes to 'sleep' during use rather than after a period of rest
- I should have mentioned this first but I also have a (Belkin) wireless keyboard. could this be some sort of (IRQ) conflict? The keyboard works fine.

I've looked at the Microsoft help (support.microsoft.com) which is frankly terrifying - containing all sorts of registry mangling. I'm sure there must be something less invasive than that.

It isn't as bad as all that. LOL

Idiot, could you please post the link that you were looking at? I may be able to simplify the instructions so they aren't so daunting.

Also, do you have the ability to change the channel the mouse is using? Instructions:
1. Press the button on the base unit. The green light should start to blink.

2. Watch the computer monitor for several seconds. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Otherwise, go to step 3.

3. Press the Connect Channel button on the bottom of the mouse.

4. Watch the green light on the base unit. It will be steady green if the synchronization was successful. If not or if the mouse still does not work, try the procedure again.

For reasons I can't identify the problem seems to have disappeared - hooray. Perhaps some sort of technical viagra has wakened up the little crittur. Thanks for the help folks
