Who is your isp? if your on ADSL(over telephone line)you will need a Adsl modem router all in one unit and your internet log in details from your isp.
The router will come with a cd to allow easy setup and install of these details. It will also allow you to turn on wireless and set up security. If your with sky all the above steps are done for you.
If your with Virgin media then you need a DSL Cable router which does not have a modem fitted. Unplug cable modem fit ethernet cable between cable modem and wan port and ethernet cable between lan port and pc. Turn on cable modem allow lights to settle then turn on router. The router should have a cd to set up security

@ Jelly not many ADSL isps ship modems with ethernet. A lot now ship modem routers however with wifi built in and will not need a router adding to the equation.

What is your BT modems model number? as your modem has ethernet any cable dsl router will do as long as its ok

this belkin model Belkin Wireless-G CableDSL Router - Ebuyer

this buffalo model Buffalo AirStation 125Mbps Wireless-G Router - Ebuyer

or this netgear NETGEAR WGR614 Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router - Ebuyer

or you could do away with the BT modem and get an integrated adsl modem router

this belkin model Belkin 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Router - Ebuyer

I personally would stop using that and look at the oll in one solution I offered as if you plug a router into a router you will need to set it up the wireless router in bridging mode and your making life harder for yourself
