Default Microsoft wireless mouse not working

I just bought a wireless microsoft intellimouse explorer 2.0. I put in the CD, installed the software, plugged in the receiver into the USB, and put the batteries into the mouse.

The software installed successfully, and the receiver light is on. The mouse's optical sensor lights up when i move my hand in front of it. Despite all of this, the mouse will not track on the screen when I move it. I downloaded a newer version of the drivers to no avail. Any ideas?
