Question [Answered] Need to plug a Dell USB keyboard to a PS/2 port

I have just bought a new Dell USB keyboard (RT7D50) to replace my crappy PS/2.
I have a KVM switch i use constantly but it's got only PS/2 input ports.
I have tried plugging the new keyboard into the switch using a PS/2 adaptor (eBay.co.uk: USB PS/2 Adaptor - Use a USB Keyboard on a PS/2 Port (item 270135190904 end time 27-Jun-07 22:00:00 BST) ),
but that doesn't work at all, it's not recognised at all.

What could be the problem?
I tried it into the native PS/2 port and that doesn't work.
I tried it in a USB port and that works.

Many thanks

Hello Fabrice,

welcome to PCHF.

Not all USB keyboards will work with these adaptors. Normally, if a keyboard supports PS/2, it is supplied as PS/2 or with this PS/2 adaptor in the box. PS/2 keyboards are still being sold in most places, as most our PC's still have PS/2 ports.

Your best best is to actually purchase a PS/2 keyboard instead of a USB one.

I don't believe so. What is the model of the keyboard? What is special about this particular one?

It's the RT7D50 that comes with the latest Dell computers.
Well the fact that i bought it already, and it's really slim and compact, and the feeling and springs on the key are really nice, and it's plain vanilla with no bells and whistles.
I haven't yet found a keyboard that i like that's PS/2.

The only thing I can think of is to add a PCI card for USB-- about as much money as the keyboard itself.
