Default Cannot install any peripherals

Okay, I'm trying to fix my boyfriend's grandad's computer which doesn't seem to want to install any USB devices at all. I know the computer sees the devices from the sound it makes when I connect them but when I go into the device manager they are all under 'other devices'. It seems the PC can see something but has no idea what anything is.

We got to this problem whilst trying to install a new printer. We ran the disc that came with the printer and everything was okay until the computer asked us to connect the printer.. which was already connected (and made the noise on the computer when we switched it on). I then had an idea to use my USB pen which already had the drivers for the printer on. Thought it was worth a try but when I plugged the USB pen in, the computer couldn't "install the new hardware". I've never had this with my USB pen and have used it on multiple computers. It always installs automatically. I asked if he had had problems with any other hardware and he told me that he couldn't get his old printer to work with this computer either.
I also checked the device manager to see if the usb ports were working properly and there were no exclamation marks by any devices other than the ones I am trying to install.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Not really an expert, just learning so would appreciate any input ^_^

Thanks

hey eminee,

You say your device appear under "other devices". Does a yelow icon appear next to them? If yes then the drivers for your devices are not loaded and so are not recognised.
