Default [Answered] Serial to usb connector

I have just purchased a new PC and everything is usb. So I have purchased a serial to usb connector cable. I used serial on the old PC for connecting my GPS and Palm for downloads. Can't seem to get the GPS or Palm to recongize this cable, keeps asking for a com1 port. Why oh why didn't they just put a serial port on the new PC. Anyway I hope I have posted this in the right section. Any help would be appreciated. Thks.

Hello reacon,

Welcome to PCHF.

Exactly what message are you having? You do need to assign your USB adaptor a com port number, so this sounds like your on the right track to me. You may also need your Windows installation CD to complete the installation.

Thks madmonkey, I'm still foolen with the usb to serial cable, almost have the Palm III workin, when I do a hotsyn, the screen is now flashing the hotsyn of an on, so I'm getting closer to solving the problem. I tried to send my waypoints to my gps through GSAK, but getting an error message. So the battle continues, I will punch away the keys until success.
