This is due to my own stupidity, and i still cant beleive i did this. I was wearing a wool sweater, and turned on my computer, i have a metal desk and keyboard tray. After a little while, i got up and went to get a drink. came back and sat down, touched the kb tray, ZAP! bad shock. my computer froze up and i restarted. the mouse works, but no response from the keyboard, tried it on the other computer, still no response. I killed a keyboard. Never thought i could ever do that. I fried a PS/2 keyboard. A nice one. It came with our gateway and i love teh setup. but i am hoping that i wont have to buy another. I am currently using a Dell one with awful keys that constantly stick down. Is it possible to fix this kb without tkaing it apart or taking it in to be fized? (the fried one) thanks

That musta been a pretty healthy shock. LOL But it doesnt take much static to knock out a circuit board. There aint much in there except a tiny circuit board, and you have to take it apart to get to it. Theyre not usually worth fixin unless its a high dollar gaming board or something like that, if you could find parts. Unless you just want to tinker with it on a rainy day youd be better to get a new one. I think the last one i bought was 7$ at wallet mart.

Ideally all computers should be on their own , seperate, grounded receptacle to HELP prevent things like this. But when a static charge from an outside source(his body) comes in contact with a component, it sometimes discharges through the component on its way to ground. (the keyboard itself is not grounded, but the cable is shielded and the circuit board is tied to ground thru it. The charge had to go thru the circuit board to get to ground.)Thats one reason why its recommended to discharge yourself by touching the metal part of the case before working on the inside of your computer(or any other electronic device. Ive seen other devices damaged from static discharge(memory, cpu), but this is the first keyboard ive heard about. Congratulations AW_3_3 , i think youre the first on the forum to do that. LoL

Cannot believe i did that....... The strange thing is. it shouldnt have gone through the keyboard. The whole frame of the desk is metal, and the metal computer case is touching one of the support columns. it should have gone through the desk into the chassis, and out through the ground shouldnt it? but nooooo...... >.<

You must be very lucky. lol I've been using a computer every day for 18 years an never fried a keyboard.
