Peripherals - IDE controller posted in the Hardware forums; What is an IDE controller.
I am trying to use IDE HDD (2) master and slave with SATA motherboard.
Will this be an answer to my problem?
thanks...
I assume this is still in reference to your other thread "need guidance on motherboard install" . The ide controller is a chip, or chipset on the motherboard that controls the primary and secondary ide channels. If you look in device manager you should see it and the sata controller listed for your board. The ide to sata adapters will do what you want by allowing you to use the ide hdd`s with your board, but they will run at whatever max speed your drives are capable of, not at sata capable speed. It shouldnt otherwise affect your performance. Heres one i ran accross that should work and wont tie up a pci slot: Cables To Go SATA Converter Board 10153 at TigerDirect.com

Thanks much for your insight,
Does the IDE controller card accomplish the same thing as the same type of adaptor you advocated?
If they do, have you heard of 2 channel (two 40 pin connectors) PCI card
or
2 channel with usb slots?
The mother board I bought has only 4 usb ports in back and only one IDE connector on the mother board
thanks
All motherboards have 1 - most have 2 IDE connectors on the motherboard.
If you want to get a PCI card that has additional IDE connectors - it's not really worth it in this day and age...but you used to be able to get them...not too sure if they'd still be around anymore however
When using the IDE HDD to SATA Motherboard connector adaptor (the one that plugs into the back of the HDD), how are the jumpers set? You may recall, I have a 40g Master and 250g slave as of now.
Do I plug into any SATA port or do I use the first and second or SATA port 0 and SATA port 1 and ignore SATA ports 2 and 3.
