Hi giohlp, welcome to PCHF.

The Unplug/Eject icon was introduced in Windows ME so it should be there.

I plug in usb memory and nothing happens in the tray, but everything else is fine. What
puts the icon there (USBdetector?), or does it happen only with certain devices?

hmmm..it should happen for all usb devices. Just make sure that all data transfer has completed between the PCand the usb device before un-plugging it from the PC.

Here's a short guide:
Alternate method to safely remove USB flash drive:
Open an Explorer window or My Computer window. Right click the drive and select Eject. Wait for your drive's light to go off. Then remove the device.

I made an icon with a rundll32 script to unplug, so that is taken care of. The thing
is why isn't the icon appearing, what process is not running or has been eliminated?
