:-) Thanks Joe

Sorry ud3, my mother called, always take the calls from your mother

I am going on the assumption that you have XP installed on your PC and are running with Office 2003, if this isn't correct you need to let me know.
click on Start, Control Panel,
In control panel make sure that you are in classic view.
click on Speach, make sure that your profile is listed, click on the Text to Speach tab and make any adjustments you like.
close out of Speach and Control Panel.

Open Word, click on tools, there should be a check mark next to Speach, if there isn't click on Speach once, you should get a box that tells you to train Office for speach recognition.
Go through the entire process, it's tedious but very worth the time.

In regard to Text to Speach, the reason you need a third party software is that XP comes with a very limited text to speach program called Narrator, designed to basically help someone with vision disabilities set up their computer, it is very poor quality and is not supported in Word. (see the attached doc for all the details.

If you actually want to use Text to Speach on a regular basis, you are going to need a third party application. Sorry, no way around that.

Let me know if you need more help with the Speach recognition.

OK, if you have XP on this computer, Control Panel will have an option on the left that either says switch to category view or switch to classic view. If you open word, click on Help, then About Microsoft Office Word and it will tell you which version you have.

Let me know :-)
