Default [Answered] Can't see USB devices

Howdy.
My USB shows up in System devices as operating properly and the card reader or flash drive shows a light and all indication is that I'm AOK as far as USB, but I go to explorer or my computer or photo program and cannot find the device? One fellow told me that when USB fuse blows on the mother board this is the symptom, which sounds right, but I have a USB printer which is working?
Whats up with this? (Dell PIII-win98SE)
Thank you.

Hi,

Your drive may need a drive letter (E:, F: etc) for it to work properly. Follow this guide to assign a drive letter manually in Windows 98 and let us know what happens.....

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Find the drive that isn't working

Double-click the icon for the Drive.

Click the Settings tab.

Under the Options section, click Removable to place a check mark in the box.

Locate the Reserved drive letters section and in the Start drive letter box, select an unused drive letter from the drop-down menu.

In the End drive letter box, select the same drive letter from the drop-down menu.

Restart the computer.

Howdy Hengis:
I plugged in a Quickie Drive and could not find it. Went in and saw that it was assigned E:\ (I could not change it) Got out and looked for it; still not there. I went to START/RUN/ E: and it looked for it and found it. Still not in explorer. I tried the same thing with Lexar multicardcard reader and it didn't work. I looked in the BIOS and and couldn't get a clue in there, but I really don't know what to look for.? It shows two hard drives on board, but will only find C:, D or E never comes up. Thanks again for your help.
Mike

To All...

A USB thumb/flash drive will not show up in the BIOS.
And most of the older drives are designed to use the letters E or F. Newer ones are designed to take the first availbe drive letter after C:

The most likely reason that Galveston couldn't find the drive in Explorer or My Computer, is because it wasn't correctly assigned a letter. To check this out, you can goto Start -> Run -> diskmgnt.msc and it will show you all the drives you have...this utility also allows you to change drive letters (execpt C to whatever you like.
