Default USB Devices no longer recognised

Hi guys

I hope you can help me with this one.

I have a printer / scanner and an external hard drive.

Both of these have worked with no problems until the other day. I had used the printer in the morning, and then unplugged it, when I plugged it in later it didn't work. I tried other USB ports, which involved unplugging my external hard drive (as I new this port definitely worked), but I just kept getting the message "USB Device not recognized..."

I then replugged my external hard drive in, and got the same message. Although when I plug it in, it spins up and the lights come on, so there is power there.

Both of these devices work on other computers, but not this one. I use Windows XP Pro SP2.

I have tried uninstalling the devices but to no avail. There is no driver for the hard drive, so I am now stuck for an answer.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

its a possibility that your usb drivers are corrupted, does anything else work that you plug in

Nothing works in the empty ports..

Sorry I forgot to mention that I do have a keyboard, trackerball and a verball (skype gadget) plugged into other ports and they work fine, but they have never been unplugged.

I have since tried System restore, but that didn't work either.

Thanks
