Default USB drive not displayed on My Computer

Hi all,

First post after unsuccessfully searching the threads.

I am running XP Home SP2.

The problem is the computer does not display devices that are plugged into my USB ports. The computer does recognize that something is connected as I can hear a beep when plugging and unplugging the device.

For a USB drive, I plugged in and went to device manager. I can see the USB drive with a drive letter but it is not displayed on "My computer".

I have tested the USB drive on several other computers and it correctly shows up on "my computer".

The only workaround is to have the drive plugged in before I start the PC. This is really inconvenient.

This is the case for cameras, printers, and USB drives.

Another item that may help troubleshoot is that the Autoplay popup no longer displays when a USB device is plugged in. There was a time that the USB devices were displayed on my PC but does not currently.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

1. Plug in your external USB hard drive, USB flash drive or card reader
2. Download and run AutoFix.exe
3. Click Next
4. Make sure that both of the Global Checks are OK. If there are problems, click the Repair button
5. Choose the drive where AutoPlay is not working correctly and click Next
6. Make sure that all policies are OK, if not click the Repair button
7. Now try to reproduce the problem by unplugging and plugging it back.
8. Click the Repair button if found any Problems.
9. Click Next and Finish
10. Unplug your USB flash drive and restart computer
11. When Windows is booted up, plug in your USB flash drive. AutoPlay dialog box should appear. If the AutoPlay dialog box still doesn't appear after fixing it with Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard, then please go through this step again. Right click on the drive letter that is created by the external USB device, select Properties, go to AutoPlay tab, Select "Prompt me each time to choose an action" and click OK.

Geekgirl,

Here are the results of the Autofix:
AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]
Time [2007-12-13 21:05:42]
Microsoft Windows Version [5.1 (Service Pack 2) <2600>]

Test [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.] - Instance [N/A]:
Result [AutoStart Setting]: Check Skipped
Result [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]: Problems
>> Repair << [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]
Step: Starting the Shell Hardware Detection service.
Result: The wizard ran into problems while trying to start the Shell Hardware Detection service.

>> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None

BTW, I have a USB 2 hub (powered) and have tired to connect the drive to the front and back.

Thanks,
T

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows OS CD.
