Default Mouse clicks not working properly

My mouse has stopped working properly. The left button won't work at all. All of the action was somwhow put to the right button. I have gone in to change access to the buttons on Device Manager and they still say the left is working. The right button sometimes doesn't work and sometimes the mouse will move items with me just hovering over them, as if I had clicked on the item to move it. I have uninstalled my mouse and then rebooted. My mouse worked "normal" for a few minutes and then it went back to the old messed up way. I'm guessing I've been infected with something, but can't seem to find anything. I've ran different hijack programs, Norton, etc. and nothing comes up. There is one program that I somehow did get that I didn't download and it comes up as Zero Tolerance/Freedom Security. I uninstalled it with their program and it does nothing. It does not uninstall. I have removed it with the Windows Program Remove and it wouldn't go away. Any idea if these two are attached and how I might get control of my mouse back? I'm running XP. Would a new mouse help? My guess is no, but after three days, I'm ready to try almost anything. BTW, I'm writing this in a public computer. I doubt that I could get it done on mine. HELP!

Hi jpkube,

Welcome to PC Help Forum!

My first thought would be that your mouse button was maybe jamming. Have you tried a different mouse at all?

I don't have another mouse to try. Have you ever heard of a mouse button just stopping? My mouse is only a few years old (2-3 years). Thanks for your reply btw!

i have heard of mouse buttons just stopping

It happens when you click too much...and 2-3 years is ages IMHO
I go through mice almost as fast as i go through keyboards...if not faster.

But please, answer 1h8bills questions

It's a mechanical. No light ob the bottom, so it's not optical. It's 2 buttons, with the roller in the middle and it's corded. I have removed the top and cleaned it out. The dust! Whoa! The left button still clicks inside and also with the mouse top on, it just doesn't respond. I'm going to buy a new one today anyways, but I had no idea they went that fast.

If you have any answers for this, I'd sure love to hear from you! Thanks again.

John
