Default Problems doing prework

I'm at an impass with doing the prework. I'm running Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

I have verified removal of P2P and warez/cracked software.

RootRepeal shuts down after runing for about 30 seconds. There is something on the computer which changes the file permissions while the software is running, effectively shutting it down. The permissions are changed to "Everyone" and I have no access to the software until I change permissions back to my current username.

This has happened once to IE8 and firefox, and these programs no longer have this specific issue. This issue is persistant with RootRepeal, Windows Malicious software removal tool, and some others, always security software.

As a side note, IE8 has issues accessing and downloading from most mainstream security sites, and redirects all Google search engine links. Windows Update has been rendered completely non-functional, as had Mcafee TPS and Spybot S&D. I'm currently running Avira, Comodo, and Bothuter, none of which detect any malicious software or activity.

Windows Problem Reports and Solutions is reporting a W32/Gaobot.worm.gen.u - Win32/RBot.3eu!Worm but no other software I've run has detected it, including Symantec Gaobot removal tool.

I hope that this info is helpful. Thanks for the assistance!

I downloaded DDS and when I run it a window very briefly opens. I was able to screen capture it and attached it as "DDS Window.jpg".

I also downloaded SecurityCheck and ran it. After pressing the 'any key' the window closed after about one second. I screen captured it and attached it as "Security Check Window.jpg".

thanks again.

Spark, regarding DDS, this is normal indication that this program is about to run. There is nothing unusual about this prompt. You need to be patient till Attach.txt and DDS.txt pop up after this prompt.

I originally ran the program and after 30 minutes no text files popped up. I subsequently re-ran the program 10 minutes ago. I'm assuming that it shouldn't take that long.

Spark,

Do you still have DDS?

I need you to boot to Safe Mode and see if you are able to run it successfully from there.
Here's how to get to Safe Mode:
As the computer is booting, press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

A restart is all you need to get back to 'Normal Mode'. If you're able to run DDS in Safe Mode, post the generated log in your reply.

Let me know.
