Default System Security virus help

My computer has been infected with the System Security virus (fake anti-virus software), and probably others. I have tried to perform the Prework instructions but my computer will not run either the Malwarebytes mbam-setup.exe or unzip HijackThis so that I can install and run them. I would appreciate any help I can get so that I can get these programs running and proceed with a cleanup.

Thanks!

pwo,

Welcome to the forums! Please try making a copy of the exe files renaming the them to something like xxx.exe. Then try running them

It is important that you retain the original exe's when doing this due to the fact that if a file needs to be deleted on a reboot it will look for the unaltered exe file.

I'm going to move your thread into our Hijackthis section for further review. A redirect will be left so you wont lose the thread

I tried copying and renaming the exe's, but still was not able to run them. Does it matter where I save them? I tried both the desktop and My Documents.

pwo,

Hmm. Look like we'll have to get creative.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

I'm not having any luck with Kaspersky. The link you provided does not load. I also tried going to the main Kaspersky page and accessing the online antivirus scan that way, but the page does not load. It seems like with the virus I have I can access everything but antivirus programs and websites.

Okay, even more creative then

Let's boot into Safe Mode. As the computer boots up please hit the F8 key and choose Safe Mode. Try installing the programs from there.

You may want to put the programs on a USB flash drive just to be sure you have them when in Safe Mode.

If this doesn't work, what protection programs do you have currently installed on your computer?
