When I try to open Regedit from Run command it does work. I mean when I type regedit and press <enter> then nothing happens. I checked in the task manager there I see an entry "svchost.exe" . So every time I type regedit i see a new entry in task manager. Finally I do not see the registry editor window. I tried sfc /scannow. but no go. Please help.

That issue is known to happen (also) as a result of a Trojan:

Go to the system32 folder and look for regedit.com and delete it. The correct file should be regedit.exe, but when you run "regedit" the regedit.com starts first.

Try Hijackthis!

Thanks for your response. I tried searching for regedit.com in sys32 folder but I couldn`t find it.
