Could you have had the "remember this setting" in Zone Alarm checked the last time you allowed T-Bird to access the internet?
Perhaps accidentally? ZA does "learn" from user responses. You could check the settings in ZA to be sure. You could also just un/reinstall ZA-- even Firewalls can get corrupted. Since yours is the free version-- no problem to do so. T-bird is a naturally pretty secure email client so I would not fret over it being commandeered too much, anyway. Your logs were clean-- so you are in good shape, I'd say.

Reinstalling Zone Alarm DID NOT correct the issue. Thunderbird still going around firewall. Oh well.

That is strange... but perhaps T-bird is on a "safe-list" built into ZA-- it is a very well-known email client. it is also reputed to be very secure by itself, so... When I have a moment I will look into this theory. tomorrow/next day or so.
