Default Computer had been really really slow

I haven't used it much since I got a new one. It had been sitting powered off for a few weeks after having been on for most of the past 7 years. Since I had turned it back on it had gotten terribly slow and unusable. I defragged the hard drive and tried to run ad-aware (for the first time in a long time), but ad-aware wouldn't update, even after a reinstall.

I followed the instructions for cleaning and posting here and it seems to be better, but I thought I would post the logs anyhow. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Firstly you say this computer is 7 years old?How much RAM/Memory does it have?

How much free space do you have left on the hard drive?

What operating system are you running?

Could you go to admin tools then disk cleanup and check all the box,s and click ok.This will clean up a lot of unwanted temp files.

Have you enabled disk compression the the C drive? This can create more space.

And one of security staff will be along and check your logs as soon as they are ready.

How to manually change the size of the virtual memory paging file

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
1.Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2.Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3.Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
4.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

Hi Jelly Bean, thanks for your help :-)

My PC is a Pentium 4 1.3 Ghz, 384 MB RAM

Hard drive is 40 GB with 12.6 GB free.

Running WIndows XP Home Version 2002 SP2

I did the disk cleanup but I don't think I can do the disk compression because my drive is a FAT 32. When I installed my XP over my Me i think I chose the wrong type of file system.

Thanks again!

Oh, and I also doubled my virtual memory to minimum 1142 and maximum 2304.

Still running slow and needs to be restarted frequently.

Thanks again

NTFS would have been better but it's not necessary, 384mb RAM isn't a lot for XP, you should consider upgrading if possible (I'm sure it is)
In Internet Explorer (not Firefox, it won't work) go to Crucial.com and click on the "Scan My System" button, this will start it's Memory scanner which will tell you how much you can have at maximum and what kind you will need, post here with the results and I'll be happy to find some inexpensive ram for you
