Default Computer acting up

Hi.

I'm getting rather frustrated with my computer these days. It is perfectly fine (well not perfectly ><) when I just turned it on. But after an hour or two, a bubble pop up (on the corner of the screen) comes up to tell me that "low virtual memory".

I understand that that pop up is rather normal, but this is somewhat like a scheduled pop-up recently. As i stated previously, it comes up after 1 or so hours, even if i had only opened one program the whole time. (In the past it only happened when i had multiple open especially when Photoshop was opened at the time).

It not only pops up but instead of simply "expanding" the virtual memory as it said it would; which in the past had simply made my computer slower for the time being, but it also begins to shut down practically every program i have, with that, some (but not all the time) a pop up would say "runtime error".

If i was to try to open the program again it will open for a mere split second before the program just blinkers off again. This is to every program.

For example, yesterday i was doing a virus scan with ad-aware but when it reached 1:24hrs the bubble pop-up appeared and the scan just stopped working.

Then I tried logging into safe-mode and taht was all ok ^^v

Please assist me in solving this problem.

I've done the prework - although i could not get the AVG report even though i did the scan. I don't know why I couldn't get the report although i did tick the
'Automatically generate report after every scan" but still there was no report. I would redo it, but it took close to 5 hours for the scan to complete.

CCleaner: C:\DOCUME~1\LINLIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\gm488XPF.exe 28.50KB
(thats the file that would always pop up when i analyse even after just cleaning.)

Thanks much in advance.

p.s I forgot to add that when i said "not perfectly" i meant that when i turn on the computer everything seems fine but when i'm using a program it'll suddenly become inactive as though i had clicked on desktop or something, but the thing is, i didn't.

Welcome to PCHF Baby,

If the programs you are currently running require more memory than is available, Windows uses free space on your hard drive to allow the programs to run. If you do not have enough free space available on your hard drive, you will receive the following error message: "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

1. Close any unnecessary programs.

2. Determine how much virtual memory your computer has. If the setting is too low, increase it for optimum performance. For instructions, click the appropriate link below:
* Determining Amount of Virtual Memory in Windows 2000/XP

3. Increase the amount of free space on your hard drive.
1. Delete your browser's cookies. For instructions, click the appropriate link below:
* Deleting Cookies and Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer 6 for Windows
* Deleting Cookies in Firefox 2.0 for Windows 2000/XP

2. Clear your browser's cache. For instructions, click the appropriate link below:
* Clearing the Cache in Internet Explorer
* Clearing the Cache in Firefox

3. Move any files you want to keep to a Jumpdrive or burn them to a CD, and then delete them from your computer.

4. Uninstall any program you do not want to keep. For instructions, refer to the appropriate article below:
* Uninstalling a Program in Windows XP

5. Uninstall programs you want to keep, and reinstall them on another drive.

Note: If you need assistance, contact a qualified computer professional.

6. Use the Disk Cleanup tool. For more information, refer to the appropriate Microsoft knowledge base article below:
* For Windows XP: Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP (Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP)

7. Scan your computer for viruses, and remove any that are detected.

That is the problem though ><

I know that that pop up is extremely normal. I have indeed seen it before, but as i said, it seems to be scheduled now for 1 or 2 hours since start-up of the computer. Also, it isn't the pop up that is bugging me but it is that it also closes everything. What really bugs me is that even when I am not using anything but one program (for example yesterday I was only using Ad-aware) it would still stuff up after one hour.

Currently I have 7.7 Gb free on my harddrive. Also, i have indeed cleared my computer of cookies (well as much as i could find) with Ad-aware, AVG, Superantispyware.

I did this all prior to finally seeking help with PChelpforum - actually i've been using Super and AVG consistently for the last few days before i finally gave in ><

It has 2 and a half hours since i turned on my computer. I actually didn't use it at all, and yet when i had come back just a moment ago I was greeted by that "warning bubble" on the side, already there probably from an hour or so ago.

And something i forgot to add the other day is that, when it comes to that moment, I will be unable to open media files, such as MVs and mp3, also even thumbnails for images fail to load, and as such images also do not load.

Thanks ^^V

I don't know if this is a part of the problem, but since I don't usually use my laptop without the power supply I didn't know this but it seems that my battery has also "died" it only last about 5 minutes >< ... I would think thats its relatively common for battery to die due to different reasons but it seems odd that it was recently 1 and half hours, i know thats nnot alot, but that is its "declination" since my purchase of the laptop. It was declining at a rather slow rate, and then all the sudden 1.30 hrs gone?! ><

Could it be apart of the problem? >< If its not possible, i guess i have to buy a replacement battery ><
