Default explorer.exe takes over 100% CPU

Everytime I use open a web window in using Internet Explorer explorer.exe uses 100% of my CPU. It uses this for 15 seconds to 2 minute depending on the webpage I have opened. I cannot do anything on the computer until explorer.exe stops using so much CPU. It is getting worse as time goes on.

I did a search on my system for explorer.exe. The result can back with 5 results.

explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS
explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB938828$
explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcatche
explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB938832\SP2QFE

Please help this is very frustrating. I have run McAfee scanner and spybot search and it has not fixed the problem.

Suggest you download and install this program (it's free) CCleaner ... Alternative Download.
1. After installing...run the program...click on Analyzer...then click on Run Cleaner.
2. On the left side of the window, click on Registry...click on Scan for issues...click on Fix selected issues.

This program will cleanup your temp files and cookies which could be slowing your IE program.

Thanks Gandalf. I did as you suggested and ccleaner removed 1.2GB of stuff from my system. I also ran the registery portion and it fixed 318 items there.

I am sorry to say that this did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

1. Recommend you run CCleaner at least once a week.

2. Click on the Pre-Work in my signature.
Attach the data files to your next reply posting.

Hello bnazarowski,

If you click Tools > Manage Add-Ons > Enable or Disable Add-Ons you can see whether any add-ons are running that you dont need. Try disabling the add-ons to see if this helps.

You will need to close and re-open Internet Explorer when you click apply.

Note: The Publishers Sun Microsystems, and adobe are ok the leave enabled.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did not know that was a menu option. I found several things that I did not know were running and turned them off.

Unfortunately it did not fix the problem.

I am running the scanners as suggested above and will be posting the "Hijackthis" results soon.
