Default Wuaueng.dll Errors in Applications Logs

My online PC at home has been freezing for a very long time. It used to happen when I was online, but seems to happen arbitrarily. It simply stops responding and the mouse will not move. Fresh installs of Windows XP or Windows 2000 have had the same result even after deep level formatting etc. The HD is in perfect condition, there are no physical problems with the PC so I've really just lived with this problem as a great inconvenience.

I only recently decided to look into the Computer Management records, and in the Event Viewer under Applications, there is nothing but a sea of red flags; the whole damn thing!. They all (99.5%) list the "wuaueng.dll" as the problem file for many different reasons, for example:

"wuaueng.dll(784) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error - 543"

Does ANYONE have any idea what these mean?

Bottom line:

- Physycally the computer shows no signs of deterioration.

- I thought the RAM might have gone bonkers and I replaced it to no avail.

- The HD has been confirmed healthy by Spinrite and Maxtor's Powermax

- Fresh installations of Windows have not worked.

- There's no other software on it, except McAfee AV, since it's pretty unreliable so no problems stemming from that.

- There IS an IRQ conflict listed in Systems Information, but it IS NOT listed in Control Panel> System>Hardware>Device Manager like an IRQ conflict would normally show itself. I was told somewhere that sometimes it's OK for parts to share IRQ's, though I'm not sure.

- The only thing left, and last possible explanation for all this, is the completely red page on my applications history logs. This "wuaueng.dll" problem is the only bit I have to identify that something is actually wrong. This is the end....

Howdy there,

Would you be able to post the event log error numbers for us?

Make sure that the PC is not overheating, and also run a windows update and download all available updates.

But it does sound like a conflict of some sort causing this problem so once we have the event log number we can look into it further.

Thank you very mcuh for the reply! I have saved copies of my Applications Logs here. I hope such links are permitted at this site:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=55G2CSZR

One list shows all the events by date, and the other list shows the same events by event number.

*ALL* the events are #'s 453, 454 and 5000, with only a single exception that looks to be from a bad installation or something. I can't make heads or tails of it so I would be really grateful if this actually meant something to someone. The PC is not overhating as you suggested.

Once again, If I've done a boo-boo with the direct link, I apologize, and will look for another way to send these logs to anyone who is willing to help. Thank you!

wuaueng.dll is a Microsoft Windows Updater Module file.It seems to me that the browser or Windows is trying to check for or do an update. It may even be that the file is corrupt..

I assume you are running windows XP at the moment, so would you be able to place your XP disk into the machine go to START - RUN and type SFC /SCANNOW

Let it run through the scan and see if it fixes any problems.

Could you also try downloading the latest windows updates - www.windowsupdate.com, if you get any errors while doing so then let us know.
  • Are you running any antivirus software?
  • How much free disk space to you currently have?

Thanky you again for the replys. I have been away for a while and I'm going to give this problm one more try. If not then I'll jsut have to get a new one sometime.

Anyway, I tried to update Windows but couldn't. I am running Windows 2000 at the moment and once I choose between the "custom" and "express" options on Windows Update, I get: Error number 0xC800021F. I Googled it but nothing definitive came up. Does this mean anything to anyone? Is Windows 2000 even still supported by the service? This is absolutely my last go at this.

Thanks for all your great suggestions thus far!!! but methinks in my PC dwelleth a demon!!! (tan tan tan taaaaaaaaan!)
