No, not a USB flash.

It's the memory card slot which users the black adaptor which you put the small SD cards in that go into mobiles.

Do you mean it is a 'Micro' SD card - which is a lot smaller than a normal SD card ? Does it slide into an Adapter in order for you to fit it into your phone?

Other way round. The Micro card from the phone goes into the adaptor to fit into the PC.

Ok.
So, to confirm, you have a 1GB Micro SD card for your phone, which you're putting in an SD adapter - as in my photo - to convert it to the size of a regular SD card, which when inserted, isn't being recognized by your PC?

I had a similar problem with my PCMCIA reader and an SD card. My solution was simple, it seemed that if I inserted the PCMCIA card with the sd card in it, nothing would happen, but when I insert the PCMCIA card empty into the drive and then put the SD card in, it works. You might try putting your adapter in the slot on your PC empty and then slide the SD card into it

I think I'd be tempted to buy (or borrow) another usb card reader to test if yours is faulty

They're really cheap: Amazon.co.uk: Integral USB 2.0 MultiCard Reader - Card reader
