Default PC wont start up

Hi,

I recently upgraded my pc and now it wont start up.

I had a 2.4 p4 processor on gigabyte motherboard
256 mb ram

added a sound card
geforce 7300 gt agp (running at 4x agp)
1 gig ram

after a few days my ram went down from 1.25 gig to 1 gig then went down to 960 without removing anything.
then yesterday my graphics card would not power up the fan and the cd makes a kind of crunching noise 3 times and even with the graphics card removed and monitor connected to the standard socket it wont show anything up and does not do any more after the 3 crunches. any advice?

i did update my agp drivers on the motherboard as the card was running rather slow.

i am going to clear the cmos tonight and remove the new ram and plug in the old one to see if that works but im not sure if this will help as i would have thought the cd player is the problem as its making the noises and the system is not coming up on the monitor??

thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Some PCI cards use part of the RAM so your RAM seems to appear lower than what is fitted.
The use like this either 32,64,128,256 of RAM,It is dedicated to use with say your graphics card and this can also be set in BIOS how much can be dedicated to another device.

A conflict can occur when you fit a new graphics card, there for you turn off onboard graphics card in BIOS to allow new one to run correctly.

Did you install new drivers for the new card?

Have you turned on onboard graphics card in BIOS so you can use it?

You seem to of not setup BIOS correctly to run the new cards nore dedicated RAM correctly your card may need to use at least 128 of your RAM to function correctly.

Hi,

I set in bios the graphics to run my agp. The graphics card has 512 mb onboard ram so i would have thought it should not use this. Also the card was running for a week before it decided to pack in along with my system it seems. Im not too fussed about the card right now i just want to be able to start my system and use it again but it just wont show anything on the monitor so i cannot go back into bios and change it to run from vga. even with the card in it wont show anything

Ok your onboard card maybe switched off?Can you refit new card to get monitor on and go into BIOS and turn onboard card back on?Maybe reinstall driver for onboard card?

You can get the drivers from manufacturers website download and save then put to floppy or CD/DVD disk then take that disk and put in crashed pc.

What are the settings on your AGP in BIOS?Yes and if you set AGP did you also choose 128,256 or another in there?

Or take out BIOS battery for 1 min and see if it resets BIOS.

Also a computer maybe set to use 64 RAM or 32 RAM example as if it was a 32 bit or 64 bit PC.

I can understand the RAM regestering 1 gig and 256 dedicated else were.however the 960 does not tally? That would make 8 bit and a 32 bit?

The bios was set to run my graphics card - was set to run agp but originally even if the graphics card was not plugged in and i plugged the monitor into the standard slot it would still show up on the monitor. now it does nothing. just makes those crunching noises and i know its from the cd player because it stops when thats completely unplugged but still does not do anything on the screen as if nothing is loading up at all. so i cant go into bios and amend anything because i see nothing with the graphics card in or not.

i know when i opened it up i did undo the fan for the processor for a second cos i was going to clean it but then decided against it and plugged it back on. do you think the processor needs reseating? im going to try my old ram in the pc and make sure everything is attached. both fans come on inside the unit and the cd player powers up (with crunching noises) but thats about it.

if i replace make sure the cpu is in and change the ram back and try the standard monitor slot along with clearing the bios do you think this will at least get me back into the system?
