Default Connecting front panel to old MB

The PS died on the ol' Compaq, and, of course I couldn't just run down and pick up a replacement at the local parts store - something about proprietary designs
So I bought a case with a ps in it and proceeded to mount the components from the Compaq.
After several issues, which are not part of this post, involving removing components and even opening the old case, I got everything mounted and reconnected. Except...it won't power up.
The on/off switch, power indicator LED and other things positioned on the front panel on the old machine, were attached to a single connector, indexed for correct attachment. The generic box has connectors, each marked as to its function. I tried to determine which function was which on the old panel (it was easy to remove from the back of the front hehe), but apparently I got it wrong, because I get no response from the machine.
How do I determine which pins on the mb are which? I am not going to be heartbroken if the HD busy light isn't there; the drive is plenty noisy enough to tell me when it is occupied. The power LED isn't essential, either, but it would sure be nice to have the thing power up when I want.
The board is marked,"PS/LED", but doesn't specify which of the 17 pins is which. The missing pin, of course, is the indexing pin. The one-piece connector on the old box had only six wires plugged into it, and the new box has a surplus plug marked, "Reset Sw", a function missing from the old one.
Can anyone help?

Welcome to PC Help Forum ResearchMan. If you can tell me the make and model of the old Compaq or what motherboard was in it, We should be able to get you up and going. If you have the manual for the old Compaq then the info might be there.

Thumbs up Re: Connecting front panel to old MB

Thanks, Lord Chance, for the advice.
The model number went out with the old case, however, it is a Canadian number and even though it probably is essentially the same as a US model, Compaq claims to have no information on the number (I went through a similar episode a couple of years back, and got that response). So even if I could give you a model number, you'd be stymied. I finally got a call back from our usual repair guy, who frequently takes several days to respond to calls, and he got me to drop off the machine. He called later to say he couldn't trace either the model number or the mobo numbers. He did some blind metering and figured out which pins should turn on the computer; the thing still won't go, so it is something beyond the ps. (The ps was dead. It was tested twice and confirmed my diagnosis) Whether the ps took out something when it croaked, or if it was the other way around, or if it was a simultaneous suicide, we may never know. All I know is, we are shopping for a new pc. The hd files have been copied to a loaner system, so the work can get caught up, and we can shop for the best package for our needs.
I appreciate your advice, and wish it could have helped. Ah, well, the old system was pretty much obsolete, with a rather slow Pentium and PC2100 RAM. It's time to get with the times.
I'll probably try to find a mobo/engine combination and turn the old machine into a Linux experimental system or something.
I have other issues with other machines which I will be posting in the near future. They aren't urgent, so they wait for some free time on my part.
