see the mouse pointer but then blank screen and the HDD light goes out(i assume its
no longer loading anything).
I'm sending this using my folks pc.

Hey bud,

Try a "Last known good" restore -

1. Start your computer.
2. keep tapping the F8 key.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

tried the F8 key thing didn't come up with last known etc at all (maybe something to do with vista?), so i tried booting from the cd instead, it didn't boot up but it reinstalled vista onto my HDD and that seems to have worked!?!
Question, when it was reinstalling it made a bakup(?) of the old vista er stuff and put it in a folder called "windows old", now, can i delete that folder as its taking up over 10gig of space and, if as i assume, it just contains all of my original install of vista, which it has installed a "fresh" version of anyway it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Did it come with a lot of preinstalled software -- in the old install?
Don't know Vista well yet-- but do you have any firewal/AV/ office apps, anything on CD or DVD ?.

It should not cause a problem with your current working install-- but you might want to look for salvage purposes-- if you don't have discs. If you don't care about any of it--and your new one runs good then delete it.

I would email tech support to get the issue "on the record" for your own protection. Warranty-- you know ?

Thanx for reply , i had done that and got an email back saying it could be a driver error and asking if i'd added any hardware or software to my comp. I've replied asking about the deletion of "windows old" folder ,so i'll wait see what they say but i always have more luck/better ideas etc from you guys on here so thought i'd ask here first.
Also as far as i'm aware it only installed vista with the usual **** that comes with any version of windows(card games, that poxy MSN, stuff like that), i installed avg anti virus and a few games last night so they won't be on the old one, so probably will be ok to delete it then? as i say i'll wait see what the suggest too just to be sure, as you say, so i've got it "on record" just in case.
