Default [Fixed] Help!!! Bleeping and no startup.

Hi, I will try and be as helpful as I can but I am not too computer- literate so please bear with me and don't laugh too much.
I have a Tiny desktop which has a Pentium 4 processor, I think it says 1.6GHz.It was running XP Pro until a week ago, when I had a friend re-install a new copy of XP Home as I had lost the old disc.
On first boot up after the install the pc bleeped and wouldn't bootup. No sounds from the drives, fan etc and nothing on the monitor. I turned the power off, waited 5 mins and turned on again. This time it booted up fine and has done sdo for 3 days. Tonight I went to turn on and the same bleeping occurred. This time when I switched off, waited and turned on again nothing happened but the bleeping which is a long(4 seconds) bleep which keeps repeating. I can't bootup into safe mode by pressing F8, it won't read either a floppy or a cd so I don't know what to do.
If it's of any use I installed the latest updates from Microsoft last night. Could that be the problem? I've looked for info on the net but it all seems a bit daunting. Can anyone explain it in simple language for me please.

Hello PatchyPants,

Without knowing which BIOS chip your computer has it will be difficult to diagnose. But perhaps you have given us enough clues. If I were to hazard a guess I would say you have a memory problem. If your friend feels up to it, Have your friend open the computer case and make sure the memory is seated properly in the slot. Also make sure all other PC cards are seated. Sometimes they will vibrate loose. Give that a try and check back.

Good hunting

Default Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.
My mate is away on hols so I took it upon myself to open up the pc. I took the memory out and put it back in, making sure it was fitted properly and started it up. Again the dreaded bleeping. I pushed all the cards into their slots, started it up and...bleep!
As a last resort I took the memory out and put it in the other memory slot, turned it on and yipeee! it works again.
Thanks so much for the advice.
