Restarts Randomly
hi, ive had the same reucurring problem with my pc for a while now, and ive looked on forums, and found that other people have similar problems, but i have not found a definitive answer. Randomly my computer will crash and restart without going to blue screen or giving any warning, but on different occasions it react differently. in the past bios would display an "overclocking failed" message after switching back on and i'd have to manually select to load windows, other times it would just switch off and not boot at all unless i tried switching it on 3 or 4 times then the "overclocking failed" message would appear again. Other times it switches off and reboots to windows, but then resets and repeats as soon as windows has finished loading. And more recently it has just been resetting and loading up again ok, only to reset again randomly later. im not even sure if its a hardware or a software problem, this is my setup:
Asus a8rmvp
AMD 4400x2 (939)
ATI X850xtx X2 (crossfire)
western Digital 80g SATA
LG dvd R/W
550watt psu
2g generic 400mhz RAM
Windows xp pro
originally i thort it was a RAM problem because of the randomness of the crashes, during games or running simple apps, just watching vids, or even whilst idling, (or though more recently crashes during games after playing for a short while, when before it seemed to crash less while gaming, hmm) Ive tried switching the RAM around, with other sticks i know work, tried them dual config/undualed and when the problem originated i had different ram entirely. Ive written off overheating as it sits pretty cool. Also power consumption isnt the issue as ive tried with only the essentials plugged in (1 g-card, no dvd etc..) and still crashes just as randomley. i dont think its a sofware issue, as i formatted my old xp home partion after the problem began and installed xp pro. still crashes, although reacts differently now. i dont think its displayed the overclocking failed message since i installed pro, just resets and stuff. The last time i remember it working properly was before i installed my new processor, (used to be AMD3000+) but ive upgraded the bios since then to accomadate the dual core and it still crashes. Also the bios settings seem ok, im not sure what they should be exactly, still havnt got my head around confusing asus bios properly, but resetting to defaults didnt help anyway. The only indication of a problem i could find in bios was when the "overclocking failed" message was displayed the cpu was displayed at 2201mhz, when it should be at 2200, but surely this wouldnt cause such a crash? Sorry for such a long rant, but really have run out of ideas, and any other input would be greatly appreciated.
