Default Gray screen trying to power on, Randomly turns off

Computer info:
The computer is an HP Pavilion ze2000 laptop.

Question:
How do I stop my computer from turning off randomly, or stop it from not turning on at all?
Or, what hardware could be causing the problem?

Symptoms:
(1)Sometimes, when I press the power button, the display will turn all gray and then it powers off a second after pressing the button.

(2)Also, it will randomly power off while I'm using it, without warning.

Figured this out so far...
So far, I can
guess it's a problem with a loose hardware
because if I hold it a certain way, it won't turn on(1), until maybe if I hold it a different way (upside down, tilted to the side, etc). Or, if it's already on, and I leave it sitting for a while, it stays on... until I pick it up(2).

Thanks for reading this, and many thanks if you have a solution!

Hi Kev
This sounds like a dodgy hard drive connector but the Tech Team may have a better idea if you'll just bear with us for a moment.

Please... Does anyone have any clue what's going on, or what I should do to fix it?

Edit: By the way, Wolfeymole, I don't understand why you think it could be because of a hard drive connector... If that was the case, wouldn't the laptop power on, and look for alternate ways of booting into the OS (CD, Floppy, USB Drive, etc)? I would think it might be the RAM loose, but I've taken out and reinserted it, and it still doesn't fix the problem.
And, now, it won't turn on at all (not because I did that with the RAM, some time has passed since I did that).

Hey Kevin,

The symptoms that you are referring to sound an awful lot like a power adapter issue, laptops have a tendency to be very vulnerable at the plug and jack setup, see this thread Laptop AC Adaptor Time Bomb.

If that is the case the safest thing to do is have it repaired, unless you are very confident in your laptop repair skills.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

I have to agree with LGW --laptops are 'famous' for power-connector problems --the number one repair-job on a laptop -- if what I've read is true.

I don't think it's the AC adapter. It's a nice guess but I guess I should have said first:
It doesn't matter whether the AC adapter or the Battery or both are connected, the same always happens. And the AC adapter is connected fine, and the light meaning "charging" turns on when it's in if the battery needs to be charged.
Besides, i've had the problem of the adapter not working before, and the thing just wouldn't turn on, or the power light would blink a few times (meaning no power).

But still, I appreciate you all trying to help =)
