Default Antialiasing and Shader Model 3

Hello all

I've recently started playing a game called Call of Juarez. The game offers the possibility of choosing which shader model to use, 2 or 3.
Why is it that if I select the Shader Model 3, Antialising becomes unavailable (greyed out)?

I use the nvidia control panel to force AA global settings at 4x (and override any application setting), but still, it's pretty obvious that AA is disabled in-game when shader model 3 is selected, 'cos of all the jaggies.

I like the way SM3 renders dust and smoke without those nasty-looking planes, but I'd like AA too!

My specs:
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Q6600 Quad Core CPU
4 GB RAM
Win XP (DX 9.0c) .

Thanks!

Zcochrane,

My apologies for your extended wait. It seems that many of our gamers have been absent this past week. I'll see if I can't find someone to assist you.

I haven't a clue about gaming or I would try to assist myself. Sorry!

ZCochrane,

Are you able to provide more detail? I'll need to research this. The terms you use haven't come up before in my support of a system.

EDIT: AHA! I believe that I've found that your NVidia GPU doesn't have full support for Shader 3.0. The bottom of this page is where I found the cards noted to be capable of full Shader 3.0.

If your card should have full Shader 3.0 capability, you might want to check for driver updates.

Further EDIT: You might wish to check the review at this site that has information about the use of Shader Mode & AntiAliasing. It doesn't sound like SM3.0 and AA are compatible.

Please let us know if you require further information or assistance.

Hello and thanks for you reply!

When that list was created, my card wasn't out on the market yet
In fact, Geforce 8 Series cards support the Shader Model 4, and, as such, support (in backwards compatibility) even Shader Model 3.

Now, that article is interesting, although it's about the X-Ray game engine, and Call of Juarez uses another engine called Chrome.

Thanks again for your help, I'll be waiting if anyone else has other insights

OK, my turn........

I'm no gamer either, but my research turned up the fact that using SM3.0 means you can't use any AA. Also, running in SM2.0 disables some special effects, something you no doubt already know.

I called my daughter (long distance), who is a gamer, for her take on this question but she's at her summertime job and unavailable.

DCiAdmin agrees: Good to know your research & mine turn up the same results :)
