Default MGS 2 On Vista

I'm sure this is quite an old problem, but I'm having no success in getting the PC version of Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance to work on Vista. I've tried the so-called audio fixes like Alchemy and 3D Sound Back, but I'm still left with a black screen when I launch the game.

I have a GTX 280 with the latest driver and a Realtek HD Audio Card with the latest driver. I have updated the game through the patch, but alas no luck. I'm trying to get it to work so I may record it via Fraps. Any suggestions other than going back to XP? I mean I would do a dual-boot if I had any idea how to. I did try the Virtual PC idea, but my gfx card seemed to vanish lol.

Any help on this would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello AdamVGR, Welcome back to the forum!

Have you tried running the game in XP compatibility mode?

I am unsure if this works with a game exe and I don't currently have any games installed on my PC to look myself

give it a try and if no joy, I will mark you thread as open and hopefully someone else will be able to give input

Regards,

Smokeycheech

Hello AdamVGR!

My apologies for the delay in responding to your question. A quick bit of research has lead me to the following:

anyways, i have a realtek ac'97 audio card and a radeon xpress 200m gfx card, i previously had windows xp, on which the game ran just fine, but after purchasing vista...i got the black screen, along with the cpu usage % going up into the 80-90's, did some reading about it...turns out in some cases its the sound drivers being ran through directsound layer, vista doesnt really support it..so what i tried (which i dont suggest you try unless you know what you're doing) was uninstalling my sound drivers,(disabling the sound card should work just as well) and then running the game...and surprisingly it ran..without sound but still it ran..but i continually got sound error messages throughout, shut off the game hoping it would still run with the sound drivers installed, and hasnt worked since,..but for your own researching, the sound drivers are ran through "IDirectSound8" which is a directx driver,my theory is that maybe realtek ac's dont support that layer yet. so maybe after realtek comes out with the next set of vista drivers it may be fixed
Perhaps that will help you as well?

Unfortunately I've tried all the sound solutions and alas it hasn't worked for me yet I'm thinking the only viable option is for me to dual-boot my PC to play the game on XP, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

Well, I dont want to go down that road unless there is another way. But since there doesn't appear to be one, I guess this is the only option.
