Yup, that's still the problem. I tried again just now, but still can't install the game.

Under 'Computer' I right clicked on 'devices with removable storage' where FM09 is showing, and then clicked on 'Explore' where I managed to start the installation.

Same old problem though, the Windows Explorer dialogue box appears, saying 'Installing Steam...' but nothing else happens

Do you agree with the HP drone that it is a hard disc problem? My laptop also clicks and screeches from time to time which may have also lead him to that conclusion

CB,

Has anyone had you run a hard drive diagnostic test?

Can you please download Astra32 from the link below and install it. After you have run it please click Diagnostics on the left > HDD diagnostics.
If will give you a hard drive health reading. If it says bad or poor you really need to replace your hard drive as soon as possible.

Thanks so much DC - according to Astra my hard drive health reading is bad. I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere!

One other thing - apologies for my rubbishness, but how do you go about getting a new hard drive?

Under warranty or not?

If still under warranty, call the manufacturer and make LOTS of noise until they honor the warranty

Otherwise, go to any local "big box" electronics store and find the right fit for the right price.

Yup, 6 months left on the warranty. I've already claimed under warranty to ebuyers (where I got the laptop) and they gave me a number to contact. I phoned them, where I got through to a friendly enough English guy. He then transferred me to some Indian call centre which is where I've been getting absolutely nowhere. Lots of questions and no answers, bouncing me between departments.

I'll take your advice and start being more vocal about them honouring the warranty.

How much is your average hard drive, by the way? Just in case I decide that life's too short to spend an hour on the phone humouring 'Derek' from Calcutta

Thanks again DC, I'll make a donation to the website as soon as I get my wages through

What size HDD would you like? I'll price a few out for you.
