Thanks TH.

I'm now sort of getting somewhere....the Football Manager installation guide begins as normal, but then a box comes up saying 'installing steam' and a separate box comes up - the dreaded Windows Installer box - which takes me back to square one -

Yeah, still having problems. Phoned the HP hotline to try and figure out what's wrong with my laptop - after an hour of being passed around departments I was eventually told that it might be a hard drive issue and that they were sending me some sort of new serial number in the post. That was 8 days ago

I'm trying to get a replacement on the warranty but they're really reluctant and are trying to waste as much of my time as possible.

I'll phone HP again tomorrow and check the delivery status, if I don't get anywhere then I might go mad!

Thanks for everyones help on here, unfortunately I'm still nowhere nearer solving the problem but the advice is appreciated

Thanks DC, but I've already uninstalled Steam. There is still a Steam icon in Programs and Features, but it's static (no icon picture and no uninstall option) and I assume that it has indeed completely uninstalled and that icon is just an empty shell

Right.

This is still the issue right?

I'm now sort of getting somewhere....the Football Manager installation guide begins as normal, but then a box comes up saying 'installing steam' and a separate box comes up - the dreaded Windows Installer box - which takes me back to square one -

I suggested the above because your uninstall didn't work as expected. Sometimes, as the documentation found at the above URL states, a corrupt uninstall file may require a reinstall of the product in order to uninstall gracefully.
