Hi everyone,
I recently installed Fallout 3 using Steam. My problem is:
No music plays during the opening screens.
No sound at all in game.
An ambient sound effect(sounded like wind in the wasteland) played for a brief moment between the 'Birth' scene and the 'Learn to walk' scene.
Anyone know the problem?

Assuming your sound card is working fine and you have updated its drivers, it sounds like you have many sound files missing from the installation.
In my installation (from CD) there is a folder in the install folder called Data and within that there is a folder called Music that is 75MB. If your folder is not at least 75MB then you have sound files missing. If it is then either your sound card is not compatible with the game or you need to update its drivers. I saw a note for Realtek and Creative soundcards that said you should disable 3D sound when running Fallout 3. If you are able to do this, you will be able to do it through the Control Panel. |

HI, thanks for the quick reply!
Since I'm installing from Steam I don't have a Music Folder on my harddrive. At least not one I could locate. Anyone have experience with Steam here? I do not have a 3D sound alternative anywhere. Update: I've downloaded and installed Bioshock as well from Steam. Neither game have sound except for during cut scenes. |

Hurray: Found the solution at the Steam support pages. (They're usually not very good, but this time they helped. :-) )
Solution for Vista users: Enable the console and type in: snd_legacy_surround 1 This works for all games it seems. Now all my games work. :-) For more solutions, check out: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...2918-QGHC-3562 |

Cool. I assume you had onboard sound?
The Music folder is usually in the Fallout 3 install directory but I guess Steam uses a different install location. Glad to hear you got it sorted. Its a pretty good game. |
